Christmas in the City at the End of the Earth

Arriving back in Ushuaia, we raced to the shed to collect the bike and head to Rio Pipo campground to meet up with all the bikers enjoying Christmas in Ushuaia.

Wow, what a site/sight. The most over landing motorcyclists we had seen since Islamabad, Pakistan in 2000. We settled in, pitching our tent on high ground, after meeting Peter and Carol from Canada who visited us in Aus way back when we were dreaming of this journey. It is the 24/12/07 and as the Brits, Americans and Aussies were outnumbered, Christmas was celebrated on the evening before. Nothing like starting early!!

The scenario for Christmas was beyond belief. Our fortune was to be blest by the presence of a Dutch biker, Gerben who enjoyed cooking for a hoard of ravenous motorcyclists during the festive season. His life appeared to be in the confines of the kitchen for most of the time. Our thanks cannot be expressed strongly enough for his huge effort.

The short rest between Christmas and New Year was spent talking to the multitude of bikers that came and went; some were heading to Antarctica, some up Ruta 3 and some to Punta Arenas, Chile.

New Year was even bigger than Christmas as our numbers swelled with more overlanding bikers and the odd back packer.

The recovering days of this time was occupied with more motorcycle travel talk as our numbers dwindled due to the beckoning road north. Our plan to follow was disrupted when snow began to fall on the morning of the fifth so our departure was delayed waiting better weather. We are blessed to have an unlimited time frame.
