From Quito: Highlands to begin, down to the jungle and up again.
Country

We began in Quito, decided to ride on the panamerican highway down to Riobamba and take a not very usual beautiful road that passes Cebadas, Atillo lakes and finally ends in Macas, the capital of Morona Santiago, one of the Oriental (jungle) provinces of Ecuador. 369km, absolutely quiet and scenic road after Riobamba and a good night.
Atillo lakes are a very impressive group of lakes located at about 3500m above sea level, near Ozogoche lagoons.

Next day the road lead us to the southern jungle province of Zamora Chinchipe. First we heated up our bikes with a gravel road that runs 31 km from Macas at the east side of the Upano River and to the town of Sucua, nice and wet. Once warm, we kept riding on the main well paved road to Zamora and then up to the highlands again to the city of Loja (2.000m).

At the end of the 417km long day, a short ride to our night stand in Vilcabamba (1600m), famous town where for some reason people used to live much longer than normal. This town now has become a party town for the younger tourists and a peaceful living spot for expats and foreigners.
