Selling the bikes in Argentina

After going from Bolivia into Chile and zig-zagging down to the south crossing the Chile/Argentina-border several times we end the motorcycle section of our trip in Buneos Aires.

We had put the bikes for sale by posting them on HU just 3 weeks before going to Buenos Aires. The idea was to continue trvavelling for another 4-8 weeks if selling took a little longer but we were surprised about the responses we got. Finally we sold the bikes a little earlier than planned.

Just to comment on those posts in the HUBB who state this was impossible, very difficult and illegal. It is not. As long as your temporary import papers are ok (e.g. they are not expired) and you do sell to a foreigner (e.g. non south american) this is easily doable and even legal.

s it is necessary to cross a border to do the legal paperwork, we spoke to a customs agent at the Buquebus ferry terminal in Buenos Aires. They said, it did not matter for them if somone els continues to drive the bike in another country as long as the same guy who brought the bike in, brings it out of the country again.

So we boarded the ferry together with our buyers, Ines and myself exported the bikes out of Aregentina. All Passport and Immigration paperwork is done on the Argentinian side within the Buquebus terminal. The bike is checked at the entrance of the ferry and our temporary import papers were taken from us.

On the Uruguayan side, the buyers drove the bikes off the boat and did their temporary import permit for Uruguay. They were even allowed to fill the form themselves. So far they did not have any further problems crossing the following borders to Argentinia and Bolivia.

As you can see further above, we did not have proper title papers nor licence plates on our way from the US down to chile. The only papers we had was a very official looking data sheet from Suzuki (Certificate of origin) an a lumsy dmv-paper slip. So the only thing we gave the buyers as vehicle papers was a very unofficial looking paper slip with the buyers names and VIN on it attached to that Suzuki data sheet. It was the same we used to cross 14 borders, so it should work for them now as well.
