Mexico in general
Although first we were in doubt if it was a good idea to start our trip in the middle of the Mexican winter, Dezember is actually the perfect month to ride through Mexico. in 30 days we did not have a single day of rain. In the mountains of Durango and Puebla it was chilli but actually fine with proper gear. On the Yucatan peninsular it actually was too hot and humid to ride. Visiting the Maya ruins of Pelanque, Edzna and Chichen Itza the heat was actually unbearable. Fortunately we were always able to leave our clothing at the bikes.
A very interesting street up the mountains leads from Ciuda Mendoza to Tehuacan. In all right turns of the Street the signs indicate left-hand drive. In all straight stretches and the left turns one drives on the right hand side as usual. This regulation is for the heavy mexican busses and trucks which are in quite bad repair some times. Canging the side of the road in every turn makes sure that the traffic going uphill always stays on the outer lane in all bends. The outer lane is not as sttep as the inner one. In other regions without that regulation we have already seen some trucks not beeing able to climb a hill due to transmission problems.
Continuing on Toll-Road Hwy 135D we have a pleasant ride through the mountains. Toll-Roads are often extremely expensive. our two bikes count as two cars. For 100 km we often pay about US$10. But sometimes it is worth it. Not that the toll-roads were particularly good but they are good to avoid all the topes on the other roads.
Besides Baja California, the best places we've visited so far were the City of Guanajuato and the Cascades of Aqua Azul. We spend New Years eve in Playa del Carmen. A busy stretch of beach this time of the year.
Now we'll head further south to Belize. We'll see if we are able to cross the border without proper paper work. We still have not received the title documents and number plates from the DMV.
Our top 5 of Mexico:
1. People and landscape of Baja California
2. The City of Guanajuato and its underworld
