Vadstena, Sweden

A small town on the edge of a sea sized lake, it’s basically a church / monastery to St Birgitta at one end and a medieval castle complete with moat at the other, with housing and shops filling in the gap. We stayed in the monastery (they have some rooms for rent in an outbuilding) in May 2016. The monastery puts on all sorts of residential courses so you never know who you’ll meet at breakfast. During the summer months the grounds round the castle host classic car / bike evenings on Wednesdays and there must have been 500 turn up when we were there - mostly 50’s Americana so bobby sox and rock n roll themed. 

Highly recomended for a few days stopover if you get the timing right - check the activities online.
