Updates

Europe - 1

Date of update
Enschede (The Netherlands, 14-05-2000) till Jenkovce (Slowakia, 25-05-2000)

Finally I left home on Sunday 14 may 2000, just one day after the fireworks explosion in our town (20 people died). Fortunately not in our area, but it had definitely an impact on my departure .

Via Germany, Czech republic and Slovakia, I'm in the Ukraine at the moment and planned to arrive in Odessa today when I discovered this Internet access.

Ukraine

Date of update
Vel. Byckiv (25-05-2000) till Feodosija (15-06-2000)

My intentions were to pay a brief visit to Vlad Turayev whose address I got through Internet, as he was willing to help me in obtaining a visa for the Ukraine.

Russia

Date of update
Zaporozhskaya (15-06-2000) till Soci (26-06-2000)

The next day I went to the east end of the Crimea to take the ferry to Russia. I arrived just after the ferry had left and the next one was leaving in 3 hours. Waiting and waiting. Finally we were able to go aboard and had the 20-minute trip. Because I was on my motorbike I was able to leave the ferry first but it had no effect at all as my immigration was the most difficult one by far (because of my visa) and I was put aside and had to wait till all others had passed.

Turkey - 1

Date of update
Trabzon (27-06-2000) till Cevlik (16-07-2000)

After an overnight trip in a very damp and hot cabin deep down in the ferry we arrived in Trabzon very early. There was only my bike and one Russian car to go through the paperwork so they had plenty of time. But they offered me some tea as well. It finally cost me USD 20 to pay for all the 'stamps' they had to put on all different kind of papers but then I was ready to go into Turkey.

Syria - 1

Date of update
Tartus (16-07-2000) till As'sweida (22-07-2000)

The border wasn't that difficult. The only thing was that they forgot to give me a Turkish visa and the officer wouldn't stamp out my passport when I didn't buy one, even if I was leaving the country. But because it was a multiple entry visa valid for 3 months I had to buy it anyhow once I was returning from Syria I bought the visa.

Jordan

Date of update
Ajilun (22-07-2000) till Amman (08-08-2000)

The next day I crossed the border with Jordan and visited the historical site in Jerash, which was very touristic but nice to see. I spend the night along a small unpaved road and had a good night. In the morning an old man passed me asking where I was coming from. I told him I was from Holland and that I was making a world trip and we had a little chat.

Syria - 2

Date of update
Damascus (08-08-2000) till Aleppo (14-08-2000)

Back to Syria. I reached the Syrian border at 1.30pm. and went through the hassle to get out of Jordan and into Syria. I was ready for a battle as the first time I entered Syria I had to buy a one month insurance for the bike (minimum) which was still valid for 10 days. But there was no battle at all as soon I showed the insurance they accepted it directly.

Turkey - 2

Date of update
Erzin (14-08-2000) till Dogubayazit (24-08-2000)

My goal was Adana where my father had sent a small package to the TNT office containing the palmtop. I had asked around for any address to send this package to, but the Dutch embassy and the AMEX-office both said they refused it 'for security reasons' and private persons refused to give their address as soon they heard there were electronic parts inside the package. Turkey customs would ask then for additional payments. So sending it to the TNT-office was the only solution left.

Iran

Date of update
Maku (24-08-2000) till Zahedan (05-09-2000)

The next morning it was a short trip to the border. There was a long line of trucks waiting but the advantage of a bike is that you can pass them all easily. I got a paper from the Turkish authorities to collect stamps. After collecting all the stamps you can leave Turkey. My passport was no problem but for the Carnet (bike registration) the office was closed. The official was outside having a relaxing chat in the sun. Once I found him we got to his office and I got his stamp in no time as well and could leave Turkey.

Pakistan - 1

Date of update
Taftan (05-09-2000) till Islamabad (17-09-2000)

Crossing the border was so easy and relaxed. I was offered a chair when they were doing the paperwork of my Carnet (bike papers) and had tea as well. After finishing everything I spend the night in a hotel in Taftan the border town on the Pakistan side.

Pakistan - 2

Date of update
Islamabad (18-09-2000) till Tarashing (12-10-2000)

On Monday 18 September I left Islamabad to go up north to the Chinese border following the Karakoram Highway (KKH). First I went to Murree on a busy road but it got very quiet after I passed Murree. Not so surprisingly after I missed a turn and was heading to Kashmir (the disputed area between Pakistan and India).

Pakistan - 3

Date of update
Tarashing (13-10-2000) till Gilgit (15-10-2000)

My plan was to go back to Astore when they told they wanted to go cross the Deosai plains. I told then this was going to get difficult so late in the season but they wanted to give it a try. In Skardu I decided not to cross the plains but when they offered me to go together I accepted. We would just see how far we were going to get and agreed to stay together.

Pakistan - 4

Date of update
Gilgit (16-10-2000) till Islamabad (02-11-2000)

After returning in Gilgit from the cold Deosai plains with the freezing night together with the Danish couple Poul & Pia, I needed some time to relax. So I spend a few day in Gilgit doing all kind of small things but mainly doing nothing but relaxing.

Pakistan - 5

Date of update
Islamabad (03-11-2000) till Lahore (09-12-2000)

My initial plan was to do some major service on the bike on the campground in Islamabad, but when I got an offer from my former employer to work in Lahore for one week I decided to do the service in Lahore.

India - 1

Date of update
Amritsar (09-12-2000) till Mumbai (07-01-2001)

I wasn't really sure if they would accept my modified extension letter at the border, but the border was just 25 km from Lahore so I could always return to let them sort out the problem. But I was worried for no reason as they accepted the paper without any problem. On the Indian side they wanted to go through all my luggage, but briefly so no major problems here as well.

India - 2

Date of update
Mumbai (14-01-2001) till Banbasa (04-04-2001)

Our transfer-time in Chennai was getting tight, as we had to go through immigration here as well, but still possible. The flight was too short to catch up any delay so we could just make it. After the plane landed it turned off the runway and stopped then. The captain told that they had problems with the steering wheel and had to wait a while to get towed to the gate. This made our transfer impossible as it delayed us for an extra 15 minutes.

India - 3

Date of update
Banbasa (24-05-2001) till Delhi (10-07-2001)

I had crossed this border before so everything went smoothly. Leaving Banbasa I went straight up into the mountains where it was much cooler and more comfortable. Through small mountain roads I was slowly making my way towards Shimla carefully avoiding leaving the mountains. It was not only cooler in the mountains it was also much less crowded. So I was thinking about rough camping again. Problem however was to find good spots.

Thailand - 1

Date of update
Bangkok (11-07-2001) till Bangkok (26-08-2001)

We left Delhi around midnight as well and arrived in Bangkok early next morning. We stored our luggage in a depot and headed directly for the cargo terminal. We entered the building with a single paper and in no time we had a stack of papers to carry around as we had to fill out several forms (each of us a separate form of course), copies of passport and carnet and so on.

Europe - 2

Date of update
Amsterdam (27-08-2001) till Amsterdam (03-10-2001)

The idea to return to Holland was a result of Jeannette's decision to join me for the rest of my trip. She thought that I was well experienced to help her with the preparations of her departure. Also I had said before I left that my trip from Holland to Australia would take about 14 months roughly as this was the time another Dutch biker had used for the same trip. But I was already 15 months travelling and 'only' reached Thailand.

Thailand - 2

Date of update
Bangkok (04-10-2001) till Nong Khai (12-11-2001)

Exhausted we arrived in Bangkok and relaxed here a couple of days first. The most important thing to do here was to get our temporary import permit for the bike extended as it was expiring within 3 days. At the Customs Head office we had to wait for 3 hours and when we got back our permit the only thing they did was adding 2 lines manually with the new expiring date. But no complaints from us as we had what we came for.

Laos - 1

Date of update
Vientiane (12-11-2001) till Savannakhet (04-12-2001)

Just after the bridge was a traffic light. Here we had to switch lanes to the right side of the road. There was hardly any traffic here but who cares. We parked our bike at the building and were redirected elsewhere. Getting our passport stamped was no problem but the carnet was a different story as we were told that no motorbikes were allowed in Laos! Euh???

Laos - 2

Date of update
Vientiane (28-01-2002) till Lakxao (10-02-2002)

As we left Thailand and arrived in Laos there was a little tiny problem. If you do not use your head, you must use your feet (or in this case your bike). Martin left our pictures on the counter at the Thai side of the border (so across the bridge). There was no doubt about, he had to drive back and so he did. While we were waiting at the border he was driving the guards on the Friendship bridge crazy for they did not know what was going on. They tried to stop him before the bridge but his bike was too fast.

Vietnam

Date of update
Cau Treo (10-02-2002) till Moc Bai (17-03-2002)

The last time Vietnam approached us with an hair-raising attitude, so we were wondered how they would approach us this second time. At least we all could park our bikes in front of the building but then we were told to wait. Although it was only 10.30 am., the Customs people had already left for lunch and were supposed to be back at 1.30 pm.. This was not really nice of them and to make it worse it started to drizzle as well.

Thailand - 4

Date of update
Poipet (30-03-2002) till Bangkok (09-04-2002)

Immigration was no problem. Customs was more difficult as they want to stamp my carnet. But I insisted on getting their white paper so I could send my old carnet back home. This caused some problems in the beginning but then it was not too much hassle as long as I filled out the paper my self. This was no problem as long as I knew which questions were being asked but another white paper was used as an example.

Philippines

Date of update
Manila (09-04-2002) till Manila (22-04-2002)

So on April 9, we were on the plane, first to Hong Kong with a connecting flight to Manila. In Bangkok I had some problems with my Swiss army knife. Nine years I was flying around with my pocket-knife in my pocket but since September 11th this was not possible anymore so I had to give it to the Security people. In Manila my pocket-knife hadn't arrive as it was (probably) still in Hong Kong. But they would have it send to Manila so I could pick it up at the airport before flying back.

Hong Kong

Date of update
Lantau Island (22-04-2002) till Lantau Island (24-04-2002)

We took the train from the airport downtown and then a taxi to find hotel which wasn't too expensive. I knew Hong Kong was expensive when I visited it before but then this doesn't really matter as your company arrange the hotels and pays for them as well. It was a little different now.

Thailand - 5

Date of update
Bangkok (24-04-2002) till Betong (18-05-2002)

The flight was without any problem and Marie Louise only had chosen the wrong line to clear Immigration as it took her 15 minutes longer to get through than it took us. In Bangkok we were happy to see our bikes again. We sorted out all our luggage so Marie Louise could take our excessive luggage with us. After a nice Sushi meal we went back to the airport to say farewell to Marie Louise. After she went through the door Jeannette had a difficult time, as expected.

Singapore

Date of update
Johor Bahru (01-06-2002) till Johor Bahru (05-06-2002)

On the other side there was also a separate motorcycle lane but to get there we had to cross 5 lanes of waiting traffic, which was fairly easy. Passing Immigration was not too bad although we had to fill out a form while everyone else just got a stamp so we were holding up the line. Customs was more complicated and when we showed our Carnets we had to wait in a small office.

Malaysia - 2

Date of update
Johor Bahru (05-06-2002) till Melacca (16-07-2002)

On the Malaysian side there were no problem at all except the usual thing that Martin had to explain Customs how to fill out a carnet, but we were entering Johor Bahru before we realized it.

Date of update
Dumai (16-07-2002) till Jakarta (10-09-2002)

After we arrived with the ferry from Malaysia our passport got stamped with a 2 months visa and we (Jason, Gion and the two of us) got a taxi to town looking for a hotel for the night as our motorbikes would arrive the next morning. We first went to a hotel that was too dirty and the next was expensive but we choose for this clean place and opted for a good night sleep to be well prepared for the hassle of the next day.
