Rwanda - East Africa Moto Camping
Follow this story by emailThis was miles away from South Florida, but that was the inteded plan. The motorcycle's journey from Cheswick, UK provided no sad stories to relate. The Shipper in London conned me out of an extra USD $300 on a volumetric fiddle that he, no doubt, used before. The packing, crating and delivery to Rwandair at Heathrow Airport went well and to plan. For that I was grateful. This sojourn into East Africa was to be a slow and measured adventure starting in Rwanda. I had no interest in Gorrillas or speeding through this mountainous Country on my way to the next waypoint, or Country.
Taking delivery of my new Honda CRF300L in Rwanda was something to endure. All encountered entities made a meal of my landed cargo. It was an expensive and lenghty process that did not appear to be any easier with a hired Customs Broker. Let's just say that the Broker reminded me of the Motorcycle Shiper in London. There was always an unexpected complication to be sorted. Each new clearance issue taking me one step further away from claiming my new moto and vacating both the airport cargo warehouse, and my esteemed Customs Broker. After three days the broker and I were happily rid of each other. Purchasing a new bike out of the UK (no export or sales taxes) allowed me a choice of machine that is not available in this part of Africa. South Africa would be the next best place to buy a moto, but the Authorities in that Country also have their unique view as to how much suffering one must endure as a Foriegner purchasing a vehicle with no residency. Next, commissioning a new bike in Kigali.
