Mojave Desert Tour - Quick Winter Getaway

Follow this story by email

I live in Idaho, and during the winter we are subject to snow and ice on the roads and periods of freezing fog.  So, we get to ride on the days when that weather is cleared up, but to take a longer trip is risky because if that weather sets in while you are gone on the bike, you might not be able to get back home safely until it clears up.

A lot of riders here put their bikes away in October and don't get them out again until March.  By January, I was getting cabin fever and couldn't stand the thought of waiting another two months.  Las Vegas is just 9 hours away if the roads are good, so I loaded my bike into the back of my pickup and headed south.

The first part of my trip was technically on four wheels.  I spend the better part of a day driving from my farm near Boise, Idaho to a friend's house in Las Vegas.  Once I was there, we unloaded my bike and parked the pickup in front of their house. After a nice dinner I rode over to my hotel for the evening, and prepared to start my trip the next day.

Day 2 But First Day Really On The Bike

Date of update

I was raring to go in the morning, so I got a luggage cart and hauled my boxes, dry bags and everything else down to the parking garage where my bike was parked.  I would have camped on the first night, but the days are so short during this time of year, that by the time I got to Las Vegas it was already dark and I had no idea where to go to camp.
