Catching up with the Tumblin' Tumbleweeds

On the AZBDR 2015

Three and a half years ago, Steve and I signed up for a Horizons blog. We had barely taken motorcycle riding classes and had yet to even buy our BMWs (for him a 1200 GSA, for me a 650 GS Sertao). Although we were considered "middle aged," we knew we were passionate about exploring and adventure, and we knew we wanted to do it on two wheels. Since that time, we have taken life by the handlebars and have done great things. Within six months of learning to ride, we set out from Tucson AZ, through the Canyonlands in Utah, down to Overland Expo outside of Flagstaff AZ, in a ten day trip that lit our travel fire (2014). The next fall, we embarked on a little trek called the AZ Backcountry Discovery Route (2015); a fantastic five day voyage from the Mexican border, 750 miles north to the Utah border, on mostly dirt/forest roads. That trip turned out to be our "warm up" for the awesome journey we took the following summer (2016): Tucson to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. What an amazing four week adventure!

Here we are now in May 2017. Drumroll please! We have started preparing for the Big Show: Tucson south to Ushuaia, Tierra Del Fuego. Blast off date: October 15, 2018. There are big changes afoot for this trip. We have decided to change out our bikes, for one. Instead of the BMWs, we will be outfitting two Suzuki DR 650s for the trip. We have just purchased our first one via Craig's List. They're very hard to come by! We will picking her up this coming Monday (5/22/17). As she is bone-stock, with no modifications, we will be using the next several months to outfit her to our liking. We will continue looking for a partner-in-crime for her and will modify the two so that our ride down through Central and South America will be SWEET.

Follow along as we embark on the trip of a lifetime! Peace.
