Armenia
Set within the beautiful Debed Canyon are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The monasteries were founded in the 10th century and are a blend of the Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture and the traditional vernacular architecture of the region. The Sanahin monastery complex is a 15-km ride west of Haghpat. Khachkars, stones with engravings of a cross, and bishop gravesites are dispersed throughout the site.
