Monastery of Geghard

Set within the stark beauty of towering cliffs, the construction of this monastery started in the 4th century, with the main cathedral being built in 1215. Partly carved into a mountain, it is surrounded on the other three sides by high, defensive walls. The chambers and tombs have decorative art and carved crosses within. The chambers are renowned for wonderful acoustics. The oldest part of the complex is the small chapel of St. Gregory.
