Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) is a red sandstone rock rising 348 m from the desert plain with a circumference of 9.4 km. It is known for the change of colour from a pink to dark red depending on the time of the year and time of day. At sunrise and sunset it appears to glow red. A sacred place to the Aboriginal people of this area, it is listed as a World Heritage site. The surrounding area has caves, ancient paintings, and many springs and waterholes.
