Lying in the heart of Bulgaria, this national park contains endangered and rare wildlife. The local people continue the traditional way of life and culture, together with local arts and crafts. The forest, being centuries old, hosts spruce, beech, fir, durmast oak and hornbeam trees. There are over 200 species of birds making this an international bird refuge. It contains high mountain pastures, deep canyons, vertical rock faces and numerous peaks with the highest at 2,000 m.
