Lake Titicaca

Bolivia
According to Inca tradition, this mystical lake was where the god, Viracoca, created the sun, stars, moon, and human beings. In 2000, a large temple was found in the depths of the lake and is thought to be around 1,000 years old. It is a huge structure measuring nearly the length of two soccer fields. Boat trips are available from the pretty town of Copacabana on the southern shore. The Moorish-style basilica, thought to be 400 years old, contains the shrine of Bolivia’s patron saint, the Dark Virgin of the Lake.
