Where the Amazon River and the Atlantic Ocean, Belem is an historic city founded by the Portuguese in 1616. The market is one of the largest in the country. Each year on the second Sunday in October, one of the largest Catholic processions of the world is celebrated. A 3-hour boat trip to Ilha de Marajó takes you to see water buffalo, monkeys, caimans, and flocks of exotic birds.
