Try to avoid weekends or public holidays (as always in china)

Try to avoid hot spots like Badaling or Mutianyu, there are a way better places to explore the Great Wall.

My favorite area is Jiankou. The wall is in its original structure and if you have the time you can hike all the way to the newer wall section. Very impressive.

Make sure you get there on a day without smog since the visibility should be good.
