Mogao Caves

A UNESCO World Heritage Site which is placed on the southern area of the Silk Route in the desert. These 492 man-made caves are situated just outside of town. They are renowned for the incredible host of Buddhist culture which is painted on the walls. Enormous stone Buddha's, frescoes, sculptures, friezes, court records and embroidery are also on show. Constructed in 336 AD, it was discovered in 1900. One of the world’s greatest discovery of Oriental culture was found in the Library Cave in 1990. This contains thousands of relics and manuscripts.
