Remedios Festival

In December, the small town of Remedios holds one of the oldest celebrations within Cuba. Las Parrandas de Remedios Festival includes music, street parties, parades, verse, rumba percussion ensembles and a fireworks competition. Dating back to 1820 when the local priest wanted to encourage people to attend the Christmas midnight mass services. Armed with tin cans, whistles, pots and pans, and horns, he hired groups of young people to make sufficient noise to wake the people and urged them to attend church.
