Estonia

This long, narrow spit at the extreme southern end of the island of Saaremaa features a 1960s lighthouse, the remains of a marine rescue station that could launch the lifeboat towards either side of the spit, and a view of the Latvian coast across the Gulf of Riga. In the summer there are usually stalls selling local products, and a nice fish restaurant. There is also a museum of WWII-era fortifications, and nearby, the Ohessaare Windmill - a unique chance to spend the night in an authentic windmill building that was designed to turn on its base to always face the wind.

The Sõrve peninsula is accessible directly from Kuressaare (main town on the island), with the east-coast road passing many beach and camping sites, and the west-coast road being less busy, much twistier, and a lot more fun!
