Santillana del Mar

Despite the name, this pretty village lies three miles from the sea and is well known for the medieval architecture. The winding, cobbled streets contain buildings built from yellow sand stone. At the centre of the town is the Plaza de Ramón Pelayo where there are houses from the 14th to 16th centuries and a medieval church with a walled cloister. No vehicles are allowed within the town, apart from the local residents.
