Famous for the monolithic rock-cut churches, it is one of Ethiopia’s holiest cities and is likened to Petra in Jordan. These eleven medieval churches are perched at 8,629 feet and are situated in an isolated and desolate spot. It is a pilgrimage centre for the many visitors throughout the year. Close by is a traditional village built with circular houses.
