These events are held each summer in many towns throughout the country, but possibly the best known is held at Braemar. Set within stunning scenery, the events take place on the first Saturday of September and is attended by a member of the Royal Family. Twirling kilts, massed pipe and drum bands, bagpipes, and traditional dance and song are the backdrop to the games. The caber toss (a 20-foot tree trunk), stone putting, Scottish hammer throw, weight throwing, weight over the bar, and tossing a bundle of straw are some of the activities.
