Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery

Reached by a long, winding stairway, the Cathedral is situated on the left bank of the Rioni River and is part of medieval Georgia. Ornamental capitals and the remains of the piers and vaulting can be viewed. Ten kilometres to the northeast, the Gelati Monastery has mosaics, wall paintings and elaborate enamel and metal work. It was a centre of education, one of the most important places of culture. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
