Asante Traditional Buildings

Ghana

These 10 traditionally-built buildings date from the Ashanti Empire of the 18th century and are the only surviving examples of the period. They are built from earth, clay, wood, and straw and, thus, are very vulnerable to the elements. Bas reliefs decorate the walls with animals, birds, plants, and traditional symbols. These are not only ornamental, but also symbolic. The buildings are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
