The Acropolis

This ancient citadel is located near Athens on a high rocky outcrop. The Parthenon and other buildings were built in the 5th century as a celebration to the culture and political achievements of the people of Athens. It also served as a refuge in the event of invasion. The Parthenon was one of the largest projects undertaken by the ancient Greeks and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
