One of the world’s best-preserved Spanish colonial cities, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is set within a volcano-rimmed valley and green mountains. Antigua has numerous buildings of note, Baroque and Spanish Renaissance Churches, monasteries, and homes that date back to 16th and 18th centuries. During the season of Lent, the city becomes one big passion play with processions walking over elaborate flowers and coloured sawdust. This tradition dates back to the 16th century.
