This ancient Maya archaeological site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ceremonial centre is 1 km from the north bank of the three square-km site. From 200-900 AD, it served as an important trading post. Construction started in 550 to 850 and is of the style of the Classic Period city of Copan. These ruins contain a series of monolithic stone monuments and sculpted calendars which offer a remarkable insight to the Mayan culture in written form.
