Mayan Ruins of Copán

Said to be one of the most important sites of the Mayan peoples, these ruins were found in 1570 and excavated in the 19th century. The Acropolis and plazas are within the main complex with other complexes surrounding it. The Ceremonial Plaza has an impressive stadium and the Hieroglyphic Stairway Plaza boasts a huge stairway which is one of the outstanding structures from the Mayan period. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
