This vast, 9th century Mahayana Buddhist Temple is one of the most visited sites in Java and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Said to be one of the world’s greatest pieces of architecture, it consists of four galleries in a rectangular formation. Decorated with over 1,000 bas-reliefs which tell of the Buddha’s past and present lives. The main dome is surrounded by 72 seated statues of Buddha. Annually, between May and October, it hosts the Ramayana festival.
