Mountain Fortress of Masada

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this fortress stands on an isolated rock plateau overlooking the Dead Sea. It is a complex of houses, cisterns, thermal baths, synagogues, and a church. Access is via the winding path or a cable car. The site commemorates the 967 men, women, and children who died in 73 AD defending themselves from Roman enemies.
