Fort Jesus, Mombasa

This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built from 1593- 1596 to protect the port. It is one of the outstanding examples of a Portuguese military fortification. The Renaissance form and layout reflect the idea that perfect proportions and geometric harmony are found within the human body. There is a moat and a museum that exhibits finds from archaeological digs.
