This evocative, historic place was founded by the Tuaregs (known as "The Blue Men of the Sahara") in the 11th or 12th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the edge of the Sahara desert, it is famous for the three big mosques, sixteen mausoleums, and many holy public places. The mosques are wonderful examples of earthen architecture as are the buildings within the city.
