Said to be the prettiest town in the country, there is some colonial architecture to be found. It is set on a peninsula overlooking a bay where the coast line has a number of mangrove swamps. The climate is tropical throughout. The town was known in the 10th century and the Portuguese set up a trading post here in 1498.
