Sukur Cultural Landscape

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is situated close to the border of Cameroon. Natural terraced fields of farmland, sacred symbols, stone pathed walkways, and the palace of the Hidi (Chief) overshadow the villages nestled below. The villages have dry stone walls, granaries, sunken animal pens, threshing floors, defensive enclosures, and wells. Iron-smelting shaft- type furnaces can be seen and these were blown with bellows. The production of iron had a considerable ritual and was of great economic benefit. These buildings were usually close to the home of the owners.
