The sole border crossing from Pakistan to India, on The Grand Trunk Road, Wagah is famous for the ceremony that takes place every night at sunset. "The lowering of the flags" or "The beating retreat" has taken place since 1959 and is a well-rehearsed and orchestrated piece of theatre. Crowds on either side of the border shout encouragement to their own country’s highly-adorned soldiers and wave flags while music blares.
