Painted Monasteries of Southern Bucovina
47.745016, 26.669518
Painted during the 15th and 16th centuries, these churches are spread over an area of 45 miles and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The paintings depict local folk art, historical events, and mythology. The highly-decorated and colourful frescoes have withstood the ravages of time with one of the best examples in the monastery of Voronet (the Sistine Chapel of the East). Here, the blue colour is obtained from lapis lazuli.
