Novi Sad was founded in 1694, when Serb merchants formed a colony across the Danube from the Petrovaradin Fortress. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it became an important trading and manufacturing centre, as well as a centre of Serbian Culture of that period. It is also the second largest city in Serbia
Petrovaradin Fortress is a Fortress in the town of Petrovaradin, which is part of the town of Novi Sad, items from the early Bronze Age have been found in the area, proving the Fortress in some form has been around since since about 3,000 BC, with also remains being found at the upper fortress from the Paleolithic Age, 19,000 to 15,000 BC. With this new development it has been established that there has been a continuous settlement at this site from the Paleolithic age to the present
