Pyramids of Meroe

16.937988, 33.748573

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has nearly 200 pyramids spread over three sites which were the burial places of people from the Merotic Kingdom. Many are ruined, having been plundered, but it was established that they were built over sepulchral chambers. Their construction differs from the Egyptian pyramids as these are smaller, more steeply angled, and made from blocks of sandstone. Reconstruction has taken place to some of the pyramids on this site.
