Old Town (Gamla Stan) is the site of the original city and dates back to the 13th century, but most buildings date from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is situated on one of the 14 islands that constitute Stockholm. Medieval alleyways and buildings, cobblestone lanes, and ancient squares can be seen. Surrounding the main square are the old merchants’ houses, including the old Stock Exchange that is now the Nobel Museum. The 18th-century, Baroque-style Royal Palace has 608 rooms, lavish interior decor, a royal chapel, and a museum.
