Spiš Castle

These ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and date back to the 12th century and were rebuilt in the 15th century. The site has been used as a location for films and is a popular tourist venue. Stunning on the setting of dolomite rock, it is one of the largest castle sites in Europe. It was a military fort and the seat of the governor of Spiš. There is also a Gothic chapel which was added in the 15th century. In 1780, the castle burnt down, but was partially reconstructed in the 20th century. This area is now the museum of Spiš culture, including a torture room and a gallery of weapons.
