Destroyed by ash from a volcano that erupted in 600 AD, this pre-Columbian Mayan farming village has been remarkably preserved under 14 layers of volcanic ash. Ceramics, half-eaten food, utensils and furniture have been excavated. The site is known as "The Pompeii of The Americas" and is recognized by UNESCO. Discovered in 1976, over 70 buildings have been unearthed so far. Excavation still continues.
