Umayyad Mosque

Also known as "The Great Mosque of Damascus", this spectacular 8th-century mosque is one of the oldest and largest in the world with beautiful interiors of gold and coloured mosaics. It is situated within the old city of Damascus. The ground plan is 97 metres by 156 metres, and the courtyard is enclosed within four walls. The dome at the centre of the prayer hall is known as the "Dome of the Eagle". There are three minarets: first-built is "The Minaret of the Bride", the tallest is "The Minaret of Jesus", and "The Western Minaret" (a.k.a. "The Minaret of Quaitbay").
