Historic City of Ayutthaya

14.35578, 100.558291

The city was founded in 1350 and was the capital of Thailand for four centuries. Once known as "The Pearl of the East", it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was razed in 1767, but the remains of huge Buddhist monasteries and tall prangs tell of the former splendour. The kraal was the stockade where wild elephants were kept. It is now a refuge for injured, orphaned or elderly elephants.
