El Djem Amphitheatre

35.29642, 10.706869

This magnificent Roman amphitheatre is said to be better preserved than the Coliseum in Rome. It is built of free-standing stone blocks without foundations and can hold 30,000 spectators. Huge outer walls rise to three storeys high. Underground tunnels and dungeons held the wild animals, criminals, and gladiators before they entered the arena. Today, the venue is a setting for various musical concerts which are often held in candle light. The museum has a vast collection of mosaics.
