The Medina or old town was built of a local pink-coloured stone, has crenellated walls, round towers, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You approach through a cobblestone square and are met with many sights, including the Great Mosque built in 850 AD and the Mosaic and Kalaout El Koubba Museums. A traditional Tunisian house called the Dar Esid has fully furnished rooms. You can descend to the catacombs and climb to the top of The Ribat which gives good views over the Medina. The souk within is a maze of stalls and small shops selling a wide variety of goods.
