Now situated 5 km inland, this was once a famous port and remains one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world. A paved marble street, 1.6 km long, bears the ruts from chariot wheels. The road leads to the Great Theatre which had seating capacity for 25,000 people. The Greek Temple of Artemis (Temple of Diana to the Romans) was considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Now, only the foundations remain. The Celsus Library was built in 135 AD and stands two storeys tall.
