The caves lie below a 70-acre complex of ornate and majestic buildings. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery is of Orthodox Christian origin and was founded in 1051. The caves were hewn as a retreat, meditation, and study centre for the monks. When they died, their bodies were left in the cool, dry atmosphere and became naturally mummified. Today, pilgrims and tourists walk through the narrow crypts carrying candles.
