The soft tannins and fruity taste of Tannat, the national wine, is produced around this area. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the oldest towns in Uruguay. The white-washed, plastered, and tiled buildings and some cobblestone streets create a picturesque destination. Points of interest include: Plaza Mayor which holds a Sunday market, the City Gate and wooden drawbridge, the lighthouse, the ruins of the Convent of San Francisco, the Viceroy’s house and the 18th-century Portuguese house called the Casa de Nacarello. The Plaza de Toros Real de San Carlos is an abandoned bullring that can be viewed from the exterior.
