This walled inner town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is renowned as a well-preserved example of a Muslim city. The crenellated brick walls are 10 m high. Four gates form the entrance to the old city. Some 250 old dwellings and many monuments can be seen. The Djuma Mosque was originally built in the 10th century, but was rebuilt from 1788 to 1789. The 112 columns set within the hypostyle hall were taken from other ancient buildings. The tiled Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum and the Tosh Kovli Palace are also historic places to visit.
