Guácharo Caves

10.132549, -63.355854

This limestone cave system is 10 km long, the longest in Venezuela. The first part of the caves is home to thousands of nocturnal birds called Oilbirds. They leave the cave system at dusk and return at about 4 AM, having fed on fresh fruit and seeds. They grow to about 60 cm with a wing span of 110 cm, are dark brown and have a long tail. Like bats, their high-pitched squeaks help them to navigate.
